Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
